Sussex Police Authority Budget 2012/13 Questionnaire

Sussex Police Authority oversees Sussex Police. One of its key duties is to set the priorities for policing and to agree a budget to achieve these targets.

The level of funding available for Sussex Police Authority based on the government's provisional grant announcement and with a precept increase of 2.5% is estimated to be £254.5 million. In order to set a balanced budget for 2011/12 the Authority will be required to deliver budget savings of £12.1 million.

The Government has offered to fund a freeze in council tax by providing Police Authorities with a one off grant which would be the equivalent of a 3% (£2.6m) rise in Council Tax.  If the Authority took the grant in 2012/13 it would mean making additional cuts of £2.2m in future years.

An alternative to taking the freeze grant would be to raise the police element of the Council Tax by 2.5%. This would mean the average Band D household paying an extra 7p per week for the police element of their Council Tax.

4. In principle, do you think the Police Authority should take the grant offered in 2012/13?

We will also be seeking every opportunity to identify areas where it may be possible to make efficiency savings which will reduce the requirement for new and or additional funding for services.
