Sussex Police Authority's Neighbourhood Policing Scrutiny Committee had heard that public confidence and Road Policing is inextricably linked. A report to the committee outlined the work done by Sussex Police to reduce the numbers of killed and seriously injured on the roads of Sussex and the success of Operation Crackdown.

Operation Crackdown is an initiative to facilitate the public reporting of anti-social driving via a website or phone number. This operation has seen communities feeling empowered to tackle the problems of anti-social driving in their areas. Feedback on the operation has been positive from partners and public alike, with other Forces copying the initiative. The empowerment of communities to assist Sussex Police in their efforts to improve road safety is now a vital tenet of the Road Policing Unit's activities, as expressed in the Authority's local policing plan.

The Local Policing Plan 2010-11 sets the Force a target to improve even further the levels of satisfaction. The Lead Member for Road Policing, Peter Bratton, will continue to challenge the Road Policing Unit's efforts to improve performance in this regard, and this will be routinely monitored by the Neighbourhood Policing Scrutiny Committee.
