The Authority's key strategic role at scrutinising performance to ensure an effective and efficient policing service for the people of Sussex, is multi-faceted, and is what we do, every day at every interaction with Sussex Police. However, the key elements of our approach to scrutinising performance can be broken down into three distinct elements; Scrutiny Committees, Upholding Standards and Lead Members.

Scrutiny Committees are key elements of the Authority's governance structure. It is here that the Authority challenge Sussex Police performance across broad spectrums of the business, from neighbourhood policing, keeping people safe, and of course, making best use of valuable resources in these difficult economic times.
An essential element of the work of the Authority in scrutinising performance in Sussex Police, is through our Lead Members. Members of the Authority are allocated, often depending on their skills and professional/personal interests, responsibility for the oversight of departments, geographical policing areas or high risk, cross-cutting issues such as Diversity.
