Police authorities are to contribute to a new policing strategy, due to be published in the summer, which will cover a wide range of areas including plans to strengthen policing accountability.

Commenting following a speech by the Policing and Justice Minister, Nick Herbert, at the APA-ACPO National Policing Conference in Manchester (1 July 2010), APA Chairman, Rob Garnham, said:

"We welcome the Home Office invitation to build on the positive engagement that has been ongoing during this year's National Policing Conference.  Police authorities are keen to contribute to a strategy that will consider a range of future policing issues including accountability.

"It is vital that police authorities make a contribution to this important debate, as we continue to ensure the police service goes on listening and reacting to the views of local people.  As discussion about the future of policing accountability continues, we will be looking for further clarity on government plans and important answers to the inherent risks which need to be acknowledged, and mitigated against.  Police authorities look forward to our meeting next week with the Home Secretary for further dialogue about the new strategy.

"I believe the tripartite policing structure, consisting of police authorities, the police and the Home Office, must continue to act as one, in developing any changes to the way policing is delivered to our communities.  But police authorities must not take their eye off the ball as we continue with our essential role in ensuring public safety, driving down crime and delivering value for money.  It is essential we keep the commitment of police authority members and staff, as there will be an even more crucial role for us during this period."
