Sussex Police Authority is looking for volunteers for their Independent Custody Visiting Scheme. The scheme is supported by the Independent Custody Visiting Association (ICVA), a voluntary organisation that promotes and supports the effective provision of custody visiting nationally. Specially selected, trained and vetted Volunteers visit detainees in custody cells across Sussex and check on their health and wellbeing, the conditions in which they are kept and the facilities offered.
Sussex Police Authority manages this scheme locally and is particularly looking for volunteers in the Brighton and Worthing areas to join our current team of visitors, although the Authority also welcomes applications from across the county. Sussex Police Authority pays expenses and gives full training to its volunteers.
Mark Dodd, 30 from Lewes, has been a volunteer with the scheme for three years : "I found out about the scheme through my local volunteer bureau and I have been working with Sussex Police Authority as an Independent Custody Visitor ever since. I really enjoy the opportunity the scheme gives me to be involved in such an important area of policing. It is a vital part of the independent nature of the Police Authority's work that I am honoured to be able to carry out and I really recommend the position to anyone with an interest in policing and criminal justice."
Volunteers are from all walks of life and sections of the community. If you are over 18 and would like to get involved in this important area of the Criminal Justice System, please contact us for an application pack and further information.
Meeting dates are listed below with links to agenda items where available.
