MEMBERS OF THE SUSSEX POLICE AUTHORITY

Mr Ben Duncan
Councillor Member

Ben was appointed to the Authority in June 2007 as the first Green Party member of a police authority outside London in England and Wales.

He grew up in East Sussex, attending secondary school in Hastings before leaving the area to study for a BA in Philosophy and Computing (Leeds), a Postgraduate diploma in newspaper Journalism (NCTJ) and an MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights (London).

He has worked as a journalist on newspapers in London, Essex and Somerset, including as editor of Enfield and Haringey Independent Series (three local weeklies in north London), and has been widely published in a range of national publications. Ben has also worked in political communication, for the London Borough of Barnet (1999-2000) and, most recently, Dr Caroline Lucas MEP (2002 - 2007).

He was elected to Brighton and Hove City Council as Green Party councillor for Queen’s Park Ward in 2007 (sitting on the Children and Young People’s Trust Board, the Equalities Forum and the Overview and Scrutiny Organisation Committee), and has been selected as the party’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Brighton Kemptown at next general election.

His particular interests and areas of specialist knowledge are human rights and publishing law, promoting equalities, and education. As a freelance journalist he has travelled widely in South and South-East Asia and East and Central Africa.

He lives a few minutes' walk from Kemptown village in Brighton with his young son.
